Favorite Free Software Picks for Treo 750
Welcome! Some of you may know me as Fastlerner from the Treo 750 discussion threads on EverythingTreo and TreoCentral (which is also mirrored to WMexperts). Every so often I see a thread go by where folks list their favorite apps. It occurred to me that it would be nice to have them listed somewhere static that can be easily referenced and updated periodically. So, having said that, here are some of my favorite picks for the 750. (I'm sure some of these could also be used on other PPC's.)
Where possible, I'll provide links to the host sites. In some cases, if they are no longer available or hard to find, I may rehost and provide a link.
Thanks, and ENJOY!
P.S. - I know there is more to list so expect this list to grow. I have a few more right offhand that I just haven't gotten around to testing yet, so stay tuned and check back!
Windows Mobile Apps by Fastlerner
Of course, since I wrote these, they make my pick list. :)
Treo 750 Picklist
- Are you running an AT&T WM6 ROM and miss your Windows Live? Here's the Windows Live installer.
- Or maybe you're running a non-AT&T ROM, but you're still on the AT&T network. Then you might want to have the AT&T Proxy Manager
- Click for Google Maps Mobile or just point your mobile browser to http://google.com/gmm
- Cellneuron's Side Button hack (hack #2 listed here) is a must have. It enables the ability to map an action to a single press of the side button. This does not affect or take away the press+hold, so now that button is dual purpose!
- Worldmate Pro is another goodie. World & local weather, currency converters, etc... Paid for version opens up even more stuff. I mainly use the free version for weather, worldtime, and currency.
- imov Messenger - Communicates with Google Talk, AOL, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger and Jabber. Only connects when you tell it to so it won't eat a hole in your data plan, and it's FREE! (I don't think they offer the free version anymore so I'm rehosting what I have.)
- RESET - Simple software application to do device resets without having to open the door and poke with a stylus. (Many thanks to Hannip and CodyPPC over at TreoCentral.)
- Treo Alert Pro - For me, this is definitely a MUST HAVE app. It provides visual and/or audible reminders of missed calls, emails, sms, and voicemails as well as an "at a glance" today screen display showing each. You can even configure it to replace your carrier line so you don't have to sacrifice ANY real estate on your today screen. A big thumbs up to Slingbox, Hannip, and CodyPPC for their continued work on this.
- Task Manager - It's not just a list of running apps, but a TRUE Task Manager. It has tabs for: Processes, CPU Usage, Applications, Windows, Services, Devices, Notifications, Ping, IPConfig, Net Stats, and RegEdit. Can't remember where I got it so I'm rehosting it.
- MortScript - Powerful mobile scripting language. If you know .bat files in DOS or shell scripts: it's something like that. Its focus is to remote control or launch other applications, not to write real applications. I.e., you can't do complex dialogs or graphics with it. It's more an hacker tool without a nifty interface, you have to write your scripts with any text editor. For beginners, this might be a bit too complicated. However, it's still far more easy to use than e.g. C++.
- MortButtons allows you to create multiple small menus, which can be used with just one button. It also offers a menu that consists of all currently running applications, thus enabling a quick and easy task switching like Alt-Tab in Windows. These menus can be assinged to your buttons with either the systems settings or any tool you use.
- TCPMP 0.72RC1 - As far as I know this is the last stable freely available release of "The Core Pocket Media Player" before it went commercial. Plays most of the stuff Pocket Media Player can't.
- TCPMP FLV Plugin gives TCPMP the ability to playback flash format.
